WHAT DOES AN INTERNAL REVENUE AGENT (EMPLOYEE PLANS AGENT) DO? An Internal Revenue Agent (Employee Plans Agent) makes independent determinations on the qualification status and performs independent examinations of employee plans. As an Internal Revenue Agent (Employee Plans) you will:
Analyze applications and issues determination letters on a variety of defined contribution plans and certain defined benefit plans under applicable Internal Revenue Code provisions. Apply technical tests to determine if applicable statutory and other requirements are met; audit returns filed in conjunction with above plans; and review operating mechanics. Consider probable effects of contributions and benefits, and ensure that plans are benefiting employees in general and do not discriminate in favor of highly compensated employees. Examine and interpret the provisions of plans and documents accompanying applications to determine their qualified and exempt status. Inspect employer's return for defined contribution plans and certain defined benefits plans to substantiate deductions. Examine accounting practices and bookkeeping systems of pension and profit sharing plans.Provide accurate technical expertise to serve internal and external customers with professional and helpful service. Determine customer's responsibilities for return filing, secure delinquent returns and performs discrepancy adjustments. Apply knowledge of the pension and profit-sharing area of tax law, precedents, rulings and court decisions in order to substantiate deductions for contributions made under deferred compensation. Proposes revocation of trust's exempt status when related plan has ceased to qualify. Recommend re-establishment of exempt status when plan has fulfilled the appropriate compliance requirements. Confers with customers to determine whether the plan satisfies all the requirements for qualifications. When applicable contacts third parties to obtain or verify information. (All grade levels) You must have a Bachelor's or higher degree in accounting from an accredited college or university that included at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) in accounting or 24 semester hours in accounting and an additional 6 semester hours in related subjects such as business law, economics, statistical/quantitative methods, computerized accounting or financial systems, financial management or finance. OR A combination of experience and education at an accredited college or university equivalent to a four year degree that included courses equivalent to a major in accounting, i.e. at least 30 semester hours in accounting or 24 semester hours in accounting and 6 semester hours in related subjects as described above. OR A Certificate as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) obtained through written examination in a State, territory or the District of Columbia. ORAre currently serving as an Internal Revenue Agent GS-0512 and have been in this position for at least one year or was previously an Internal Revenue Agent GS-0512 and held the position for at least one year.In addition to the above qualifications, you must possess the following professional accounting knowledges:

In addition to the basic requirement, you must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is experience that demonstrates skill in applying the principles, concepts and methodology of professional accounting and related fields and skill in communicating and dealing effectively with others. Qualifying experience may have been in accounting, auditing, tax, financial, legal, or other work that required the knowledge and skill defined above; OR One year of graduate level education in accounting, or a related field such as business, finance, law, economics, management, statistical/quantitative methods or computer science. ORSuperior Academic Achievement may be met by having a Bachelor's degree, with one of the following:
A GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all completed undergraduate courses or those completed in the last two years of study, or a GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for all courses in your major field of study or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of study, or rank in the upper one third of your class in the college, university, or major subdivision, or membership in a national honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. GS-9 LEVEL:
In addition to the basic requirement, You must have 1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is experience that demonstrates skill in applying the principles, concepts and methodology of professional accounting and related fields and skill in communicating and dealing effectively with others. Qualifying experience may have been in accounting, auditing, tax, financial, legal, or other work that required the knowledge and skill defined above; OR A Master's or 2 full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in accounting; or a related field of study such as business, finance, law, economics, management, statistical/quantitative methods, computer science or another related field. GS-11 LEVEL:
In addition to the basic requirement, You must have1 year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is experience that demonstrates skill in applying professional accounting principles, concepts and methodology to the examination of accounting books, records and systems; interacting effectively in a wide range of situations with a broad range of individuals.Qualifying experience would include the interpreting and applying tax law for individuals and business and/or exempt organizations; in business and trade practices to analyze business operations and financial conditions; OR Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. equivalent doctoral degree in accounting or a related field such as, business, finance, law, economics, management, statistical/quantitative methods, or computer science. Graduate level education is education above the bachelor's degree level. For Grades 5 through 11:
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions. - The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
